This month’s Story Changes Culture Book Club selection
Bigger, by Ren Cedar Fuller
Bigger is about growth, empathy, embodiment, and how our understanding about ourselves and others changes over time. Ren explores her relationship with her father, who she comes to understand was likely autistic long before people like him were identified or supported (“Naming My Father”). She tells us beautiful stories about being a mom to a transgender and non-binary child, illustrating both her immediate celebration when Indigo came out and her desire to keep them safe (“Checklist for a Sign-Making Party”). She writes with such warmth and love about her immigrant mother (“Four Words”) and with deep self awareness in her piece about coming of age in Southern California (“The Tar Rocks”). These are just a few examples of the essays in the collection. We believe the themes that Cedar Fuller explores are incredibly timely and can't wait to hear what you think.
